In short: March to June and mid-September to November are the best months for most of Himachal; December to February is for snow; and July to mid-September is the monsoon, when landslides make travel in the middle hills unpredictable — but it is the best season for Spiti and Lahaul, which lie in the rain shadow.

Summer (April to June)
The hill stations were built as escapes from the heat of the plains, and in May and June it shows: Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala are pleasant while Delhi bakes, and all of India seems to arrive at once. Book hotels, buses and tours early, set off on day trips before 8 am, and consider quieter bases such as Naggar, Dharamkot or Chail.
Monsoon (July to mid-September)
The monsoon hits the outer ranges hard. Dharamshala is one of the wettest places in India, and the Kullu–Manali highway, the Kinnaur road and the Parvati Valley are prone to landslides and flash floods. Travel is possible but needs flexibility. This is, however, the best time for Spiti and Lahaul, and the forests and waterfalls are at their greenest.
Autumn (mid-September to November)
For many, the finest season: the air is washed clear after the rains, the snow peaks are sharp, apple orchards are heavy with fruit and the trekking and paragliding seasons peak. Kullu Dussehra fills the valley with music in October.
Winter (December to February)
Snow transforms Shimla, Manali and Kufri, and Solang becomes a ski area. Some high roads close and the Atal Tunnel approaches can shut after heavy snowfall; Spiti is reachable only via Kinnaur and only for well-prepared travellers. Hotels offer good rates outside Christmas and New Year.
Festivals worth planning around
- Losar (Tibetan New Year, February/March) — McLeod Ganj and Spiti monasteries.
- Doongri / Hadimba Devi fair (May) — Manali.
- Minjar fair (July/August) — Chamba.
- Kullu Dussehra (usually October) — Kullu.
- International Himalayan Festival (December) — Dharamshala / McLeod Ganj.
