Himachal Pradesh has no big international airport and only a few railway lines, so most journeys end by road. The good news: Delhi is the hub for almost every route, Chandigarh is the gateway to the hills, and overnight buses make the long legs painless.
From Delhi: the overview
Delhi to Shimla is roughly 340–360 km, to Manali 530–550 km and to Dharamshala around 470–480 km. The most popular way is an overnight Volvo (air-conditioned semi-sleeper) bus run by HRTC (Himachal Road Transport Corporation) or private operators, departing in the evening and arriving in the morning.
| Route | By bus | By car | Rail / air option |

| Delhi → Dharamshala | 10–12 hrs | 9–10 hrs | Fly to Kangra (Gaggal); train to Pathankot + road |
| Delhi → Kasol | 11–13 hrs (to Bhuntar/Kasol) | 10–11 hrs | Fly to Bhuntar + 30 km |
| Chandigarh → Shimla | 3.5–4 hrs | 3–3.5 hrs | Kalka toy train from nearby Kalka |

| Shimla → Kaza (Spiti) | 12+ hrs (via Kinnaur) | 2 days recommended | — |
By bus
HRTC runs a huge network, from luxury Volvos to ordinary buses that reach almost every village; private operators add more Volvos on the main tourist routes. Delhi departures leave from ISBT Kashmere Gate, and many Dharamshala and Manali buses also pick up at Majnu ka Tilla (the Tibetan colony). Book on the HRTC website or bus-booking apps, especially for Friday nights and holidays.
- Choose a seat on the left side going up to Manali for the best Beas river views after Mandi.
- Bring a warm layer — Volvo air-conditioning is cold and hill mornings colder.
- Motion sickness is common on hill roads: sit forward, avoid heavy meals and carry tablets if you need them.
By train
No broad-gauge line reaches the main hill stations. The key railheads are Chandigarh and Kalka (for Shimla), Pathankot (for Dharamshala and Dalhousie) and Una/Amb Andaura (for the Kangra area). From Kalka, the Kalka–Shimla toy train is the scenic way up. The narrow-gauge Kangra Valley Railway from Pathankot to Joginder Nagar is beautiful but has had long service disruptions — check before relying on it.
By air
Three small airports have flights from Delhi: Kangra/Gaggal (for Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj), Kullu–Bhuntar (for Manali and Kasol) and Shimla–Jubbarhatti. Schedules are limited and weather-dependent, especially in winter and the monsoon. Chandigarh airport has many more flights and is 3–4 hours by road from Shimla.
By car or private transfer
Driving yourself is possible — roads have improved hugely with the new four-lane highways and tunnels — but mountain driving is tiring and landslides can close roads for hours. Many visitors hire a car with a local driver or book a private transfer from Chandigarh. Avoid driving after dark on mountain roads.
Getting around inside Himachal
- HRTC buses link every town cheaply; journeys are slow but reliable.
- Taxis in Manali, Shimla and McLeod Ganj work through taxi unions with fixed rates for common routes; confirm the price before starting.
- Permits: Rohtang Pass needs an online vehicle permit; foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the Kinnaur–Spiti border stretch.
- Monsoon: from July to mid-September, check road status every day and build buffer days into your plan.
